About our fiestas
Here on our island and in the Northern Marianas, fiestas happen almost every weekend. We celebrate our village patron saints with family, friends and visitors! Many pray the patron saint's novena (nobena) prayers for nine days and end of the feast day or weekend the church has scheduled to be the feast day and usually on a weekend. A mass is celebrated with a procession and a huge feast put together by the parishioners of that church/village.
People also make time to have a fiesta at their homes and invite everyone they know to join them. These feasts of food, desserts, drink and celebration are very population and allow us to share our love of faith, food and culture.
Popular dishes you may find at a fiesta include:
Red Rice - rice cooked with achote seeds that make the rice a "red" or more of an orange color, cooked with a mix of onions, garlic, seasoned with salt. Some ladies (our moms) choose to add even more ingredients like green onions and bacon!
BBQ meats - Guam has an awesome marinade and it keeps getting better and better with new ones coming out every year! You must try some... barbeque chicken, ribs, fish, and more are available.
Fina'denne - a must try sauce we use with everything... kinda like tobassco! Adds great flavor to already yummy dishes on the fiesta table.
Shrimp patties - my sister makes some of the best of these yummy fritters! deep-fried and filled with a flour batter, chunks of shrimp and mixed vegetables.
Desserts - bonelos aga', latiya, kalamai, madoja, and more!
If you've never been to a Chamorro fiesta, make time to visit one of the villages during a feast day! You won't regret tasting the many appetizers, entrees, and desserts we have to offer!
