Please join us when we go live with February issue.

Our March is will focus on IslanderView's 8th anniversary and the journey to 2018.  Established in 2010, we have been mainly on social media and relaunched this blogsite last November.  Much appreciation to Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera for inspiring me with her blogsite and being the web master for PIBBA Guam, PIBBA International, both the Guam Poets Club & Micronesia Poets ClubSaina Ma'ase Dr. Rivera!

IslanderView INSPIRATION / QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today, I want to SHARE.
Sharing is caring, right?

We've been talking about pursuing dreams and goals for 2018.
I got to thinking that sometimes we want to do something
but we don't know where to start.
Is that your case right now?

Let's start at the beginning and guide you to the first, second, and maybe even the third step.  Please bear in mind that I am not an expert on everything.  You'll eventually need to do your own research and determine the next steps on your own, but don't worry!  I'll be here if you need any inspiration and guiding words and most of all, support!

LET'S BEGIN!

FIRST STEP
Write down things you are interested in and love to do.
Hobbies, past times, what do you LOVE to do?
Help others? Work with your hands? Fix things? Build things?
Write all of them down.

SECOND STEP
Choose your top 3-5 things you love to do.
Think about each of them and start noting what JOB title each of those things could fall under.

THIRD STEP
Now choose the top 3 things.
What job title could they fall under?
List all of them. Don't limit yourself.
For example, like to teach or train?
TEACH?

Teachers most likely need a degree in education.
This will take up 4 years minimum.
If you have a degree in another field, you may take less to get the teaching degree (& certification).
You need to be a certified teacher to teach.  This applies to any state in the U.S.
TRAIN?
Trainers do not necessarily need a degree in education,
but most likely need a Certificate in specific fields and this helps with job offers.
FOR BOTH OF THESE, you can start at the Guam Community College.  GCC offers both 2-year degrees and technical training certificates to students.  You do not need to be a recent graduate of high school.  BONUS:  Starting at a 2-year college has many perks!
A bit of a slower pace, friendly supportive staff & faculty, and if your parents did not go to college, you can get a "free" education!  Apply for the PELL Grant and other grants and student loans at
If you prefer to go straight to a 4-year college, UOG offers undergraduate, graduate and terminal degrees to all.

Starting with an education is a good bet.
Employers tend to see this as you showing commitment to something.

DON'T HAVE TIME FOR SCHOOL?
What else was on your list?
Love to write?  Start a blog?
Love to draw or paint?  Start making portfolio.  Sell them at the night markets or online; you'll need a website to do this.
Love to fix cars?  Get a business license and start getting the word out to family & friends.
Get references for anything you do.
People trust their family & friends to make recommendations.

Whatever you choose to do, make time to plan by writing things down.
That is the start of any good business plan.

STARTED SOMETHING ALREADY?

And if nothing else,

Your dreams can come true this year!
Take one step at a time.
Don't stop unless it's just for a short break.
You deserve the break if you're working toward making your dream come true.
